Homeowners Beware: Heating-Caused Fires Pose Risks in the Fall Season

As we usher in another fall season, homeowners are urged to exercise caution against heating-caused fires, a persistent concern that demands attention.

Heating fires rank as the second leading cause of residential fires across the United States, constituting 14 percent of all such incidents. These fires encompass events where heat sources like water heaters, heating stoves, fireplaces, and portable or fixed heating units are involved.

Statistics from 2008 to 2010 reveal an alarming annual average of 50,100 heating fires in residential settings, causing significant damage to lives and properties. The estimated annual property damage during this period amounts to a staggering $326 million, accompanied by an average of 150 deaths and 575 injuries each year.

The U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) report titled “Heating Fires in Residential Buildings (2008-2010)” provides detailed insights into the types of heating fires, their peak times, and seasonal occurrence. Notably, heating fires peak during the early evening hours from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., constituting 30 percent of all residential heating fires. Confined fires from residential heating devices, including fuel burners, flues, and chimneys, account for 87 percent of these incidents.

Considering the severity of heating-caused fires, the USFA emphasizes several precautionary measures. Homeowners are advised to maintain heating equipment reliability through annual professional inspections and cleaning. Installing carbon monoxide (CO) alarms in every home is recommended for early warnings. Additionally, the use of heating equipment with labels from recognized testing laboratories is encouraged.
