Life Insurance: A Thing I Thought About Late, Maybe Too Late

I’ll be honest, life insurance wasn’t exactly the first thing on my list when I started working. You think you’re invincible when you’re young, like bills and death both belong to somebody else. Then—bam—you realize it don’t quite work that way.

So what is it, really? People say life insurance is just a contract, but to me, it feels more like a promise you buy with money you might never see. I pay some premiums, a company takes them, and one day if I’m not around, they give cash to the folks I care about. Strange deal when you think of it, but also kinda brilliant.

The cash they pay out, they call it “death benefit.” Sounds cold but it’s exactly that. Money for rent, food, school fees, paying off whatever’s left behind. I see it like an invisible umbrella—you never want to open it, but knowing it’s folded in your bag helps.

Now, why does anybody need it? Good question. People wait until gray hairs start showing, but truth? It’s smarter to grab it early. My thought is simple: life is fragile, and when I’m gone (could be tomorrow, nobody knows), at least my family don’t suffer financially.

Some reasons bounce in my head:

  • Kids still need school, food doesn’t stop, bills never end.

  • Debts, oh boy, debts don’t disappear just because you did.

  • Spouse maybe wanna retire, or just live without stress.

  • And honestly… just sleeping better knowing things won’t crash for them.

I didn’t even realize there’s different types until I googled too much. Term life—cheapest, short and sweet. You pick 10, 20, maybe 30 years, it covers you, then poof. Whole life? Expensive but sticks around forever, plus some kind of savings pot inside. Universal? Flexible but feels complicated, premiums bouncing up and down. Variable? You gamble with investments, could be jackpot, could be disaster.

Me? I went term. Straightforward, no games. I can upgrade later if I want, that’s how I see it.

But then the question: how much is enough? That part tripped me. Some people say “10 times your salary,” but honestly it depends. Mortgage, loans, what kids cost, the life you want your family to keep… all these stack together. For me, with a house loan still chasing me and kids maybe heading to college someday, I leaned heavier on coverage.

Premiums, oh they don’t come from nowhere. Company checks your age, your health, even the nonsense habits you do. Smoke? Expensive. Drink too much? Same. Love skydiving? Pay more, friend. Younger people luck out—cheaper, simpler. That’s why I wish I’d started earlier.

Funny thing: people got myths about this stuff. I hear them all the time. “I’m young, I don’t need it.” Wrong. “Too costly.” Not true, term can be like two bucks a day. “No kids, so why bother.” Still, someone gotta handle funeral costs, right? “My work insurance is fine.” Ha, until you switch jobs and it vanish.

When I finally sat down to buy, I learned a few lessons. Don’t just grab the first company smiling at you. Compare. Read fine print, even the boring parts nobody wants to read. Think honest about what your family actually needs, not just what feels cheap. And check again every few years because life changes.

I see life insurance less like a financial trick and more like a small love letter in disguise. You won’t be here, but the money will. You give them time to breathe instead of panic. It’s maybe one of the most boring purchases you’ll ever make, and one of the most meaningful too.

So, final thought, personal: If you’re hesitating, don’t. Better to have it sleeping in the drawer than be the person who said “I’ll do it later” and later never came.
